Twenty-One Years of Presenting the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning

10th Annual Faculty Learning Community Developers’ and Facilitators’ Summer Institute & Conference

June 17-20, 2009 • Claremont, California

Institute and Conference Information

Photo of conference participantsCommunity is often missing in higher education, where connections across disciplines and institutional units are overlooked. Faculty and professional learning communities (FLCs) help establish these connections and achieve most of the outcomes of student learning communities: increased interest in learning, retention, active learning, rate of intellectual development, and civic contributions to the common good. The safety and support engendered in a community enable risk taking and the achievement of both individual and team objectives. Evidence shows that FLCs provide effective "deep learning" that encourages and supports faculty to investigate, attempt, assess, and adopt new methods of teaching.

FLC developers and facilitators have been identified as the most important keys to FLC success. Developers/Facilitators can learn successful strategies and methods for designing, implementing, and facilitating FLCs and FLC programs at the 10th annual FLC Summer Institute and Conference. The annual FLC Conference (including Institute Presentations) also is open to presenters and participants not in the institute.

Location

The 10th annual Institute will be held in Sunny Southern California, 30 miles east of Los Angeles in Claremont, California. Conveniently located in the San Gabriel Valley, the FLC Institute is reachable in less than an hour from Los Angeles, San Diego and the Inland Empire. The Claremont Doubletree Hotel and Conference Center provides outstanding accommodations for both meetings and lodging.

Travel

The Ontario (California) airport is a 20 minute drive and is served by most major airlines and car rental companies. Renting a car is recommended. Shuttles and taxis from the Ontario airport cost between $25-$40.

Teams

Photo of the venueWe have learned from prior participants that coming as a team has made a big difference in how easily they were able to develop FLCs on their campuses. We therefore give preference for the Institute to teams of three from a campus, with a maximum of two teams per institution (there is no limit on Conference-only attendance). Individuals who do not come as part of a campus/institution team will be assigned to a three-person team from a similar type institution, based on their interests.

Registration Limits and Process

There is a strict limit of 72 total participants in order to provide adequate time and resources for each group. Registrations will be accepted and places held based on receipt of the registration fee; details on team members can be submitted up to one month prior to the Institute.
